Hair & Scalp: Towards state-of-the-art technologies for complete hair measurements

The C-Cube is evolving and becoming a reference solution in hair studies.

Specific needs for hair research

Hair care is becoming more and more specific and claims measurable effects on:

  • Hair regrowth or density,
  • The quality of the hair fiber (thickness, solidity, shine, etc.),
  • Scalp health (redness, irritation, scales).

These claims require rigorous and reproducible protocols, with the ability to quantitatively and localized evaluate the effects of care. Dermoroscopic imaging, historically used for the skin, has its place in the study of the scalp and hair.

The C-Cube: a precise imager for hair studies

The C-Cube is a microdermoscopic imager that has been widely proven in skin studies. Based on very high-definition optics and a homogeneous and reproducible lighting system, it makes it possible to capture perfectly standardized images, in particular thanks to its colorimetric and metric calibration. This level of fidelity makes it possible to rigorously analyze skin evolution over time.

Lightweight, easy to handle, and now enriched with new automated analysis modes, the C-Cube becomes a powerful ally for objectifying the effects of a treatment on hair and scalp. Thanks to:

  • Homogeneous lighting
  • Its high optical resolution
  • Its built-in analysis algorithms

It is easily adapted to clinical protocols conducted in the hair field.

Accurate, reproducible and automated capillary measurements

Hair density

The C-Cube allows the visible hair density per square centimeter to be measured from high-resolution dermoscopic images. The analysis is based on automatic follicle detection, categorized (single, double, triple, and more).

This measurement can be replicated identically in longitudinal monitoring, making it particularly suitable for hair regrowth protocols.

Hair diameter

Measuring the diameter of the hair is now possible automatically. The algorithm identifies each fiber in the field and calculates its diameter, allowing them to be qualified as Vellus or Terminals.

This feature is valuable in demonstrating the effect of a thickening, strengthening or restructuring treatment of the hair fiber.

Hair length

The C-Cube is also able to evaluate hair length automatically from an image. Each fiber detected is measured individually, which makes it possible to precisely quantify hair growth over a defined area, and the level of anagens and telogen. This analysis is relevant in the context of studies on regrowth or to compare the condition of the hair before and after the procedure.

Scalp erythema

Finally, the C-Cube offers a unique analysis of the condition of the scalp, with the ability to detect redness without interference from the hair. Thanks to intelligent segmentation, only the pixels corresponding to the skin of the scalp are taken into account, which makes it possible to obtain a faithful measurement of the level of inflammation or irritation (by erythema index in %). This analysis is ideal for objectifying the effectiveness of soothing, sebum-regulating or anti-itching treatments

Scalp dryness and seborrhea: ex vivo analyses

Beyond the density and quality of the fiber, the health of the scalp is also based on a balance between hydration and sebum production. Excessive dryness results in visible flaking and feelings of discomfort, while seborrhea leads to excess sebum causing shine, oily dandruff and sometimes itching. To objectify these disorders, the C-Cube can be associated with specific patches:

  • D-Squame® or Corneofix® patches to collect and quantify scales, allowing a standardized measurement of scalp flaking;
Dryness measurement on Corneofix® patch
  • Sebutape® or Sebufix® patches to capture and analyze the amount of sebum produced, with classification into different severity categories.

These ex vivo approaches offer a quantitative, reproducible and complementary measure to in vivo analyses, ideal for demonstrating the effectiveness of soothing, moisturizing, sebum-regulating or anti-dandruff treatments.

With the automation of its hair analyses, the C-Cube is now a very complete hair imaging tool on the market. It meets many challenges of clinical studies and efficacy tests of hair and scalp care.

Whether it’s objectifying regrowth, demonstrating a thickening effect, or visualizing the impact of a soothing treatment, the C-Cube transforms every image into measurable, scientifically robust evidence.
